Our Future Plans & Projects

About Us

Amatsiko is a registered community based organization (CBO) operating in South- Western Uganda, Kabale District, Kigezi region. The idea for the project was initially conceived in 2005 by Alex Atuheire, the project director, after he saw the detrimental effects that being orphaned or vulnerable had on the future of the community's children.

1. Water and Sanitation

Life on Earth is dependent on water, yet nearly 800 million people lack access to clean water and about 2.5 billion people lack access to modern sanitation facilities.

Amatsiko would like to address this global issue by establishing sustainable water sources and means of sanitation.

When a community has access to a safe water and sanitation the benefits are widespread. Three million people die from waterborne disease each year in developing countries; however, the benefits expand far past health. Girls in communities without safe water and washrooms often drop out of school upon reaching puberty, and many children miss school because they travel long distances each day to retrieve clean water. Clean sources of accessible water improve health and school enrollment and increase productivity within the community.

One solution to this problem (water shortage) is to fund-raise build a simple tank for a family or build a well for a village. You can donate, or fundraise or volunteer or tell a friend about this.

Fundraising can be fun and easy. This would work because most people want to give to something that is very big deal right now. Water shortage is a big deal. With ONLY $300 you can help build a tank for a family that holds at least 8,000 – 10,000 litres and with $1,500 you can help build a well that serves more than 800 people.

2. Building A School

Amatsiko Organization believes that education is the key to success and that education should be a right and not just a privilege. Sadly, in Uganda many children are simply not afforded the chance to get a quality education.

At least 68 million primary school-age children around the world are denied their right to education. One of the main obstacles preventing children from going to school is poverty. We believe that the poverty cycle can be broken by all children getting a good education.

Amatsiko is currently running a Nursery and Primary School. There are over 120 students ranging from 3 – 12 years. Most of these children are orphans, vulnerable, or HIV + or street children. These children have either poor or no guardians and need resources to allow them to be educated.

At present the school is operating on a rented land and would like to purchase a plot of land on which they can build their own school. The school is paying a monthly rental fee for use of their existing buildings. The cost of rent at this time is 900,000 Ugandan Shillings/month ($250 USD).  The community and guardians usually raises these funds monthly. Sometimes they find it harder to raise the funds for rent due to other monthly expenses associated with running the school.

The number of students enrolled at Amatsiko Preparatory School continues to increase each year and as a result, we are quickly outgrowing the existing buildings. At the present time, our building can accommodate 200 children. This is unfortunate because it means many children are left out due to lack of adequate space. Children with disabilities are home-based due to the lack of appropriate space to accommodate them. At the present time, not all of our students can stay at the school because we lack a place for them to sleep.

Our dream is to build permanent school structures on our land with boarding facilities to accommodate the children- a space where they can learn, play and grow in a safe positive environment.

To achieve our goal, we are seeking expert advice to help us develop a feasible plan to raise the funds necessary to build these structures.
